The Truth…

A good word given to me by one of my mentors…

“Speak the truth in love. Without love, the truth is spoken harshly… without truth, the message is hollow.”

This reminds me of a situation where I had to let a former employee go. This employee had done something clearly pre-meditated and irresponsible. Everything in me wanted to give this employee a “piece of my mind” as I terminated their employment. As I confronted this person with the truth of the unacceptable deed that had been done, I somehow managed to keep my calm even as they fired back at me initially. But as I continued, I was shocked at what happened next. After firing the individual this person looked me in the eyes, and said, “I was wrong… I knew what I was doing was wrong and I did it anyway. I’m sorry.” And then, before leaving, the individual shook my hand! Although this individual is no longer employed with our organization, I still see them fairly regularly and there is a mutual respect present. Had I flown off the handle and spoken harshly this surely would have ended differently. This is certainly not to say all similar situations will end this way. It also does not mean you should ever compromise your morals and commitment to excellence because you are worried that people won’t “like” you. In fact, you will find that in leadership, it is very likely that at some point, you will be disliked, and even hated. However, use the opportunities you have, especially in tough situations to:

“Speak the truth in love. Without love, the truth is spoken harshly… without truth, the message is hollow.”
